How long it takes to drive around the South Island will depend on the pace at which you want to travel. The distance from the most northern to the southern tip of the island is 895 km, and it would take roughly two days to travel by car. Ideally, you would give yourself more time to travel and afford a week or more. The island may be small geographically, but it is also vast and diverse. The South Island is home to the buzzing Queenstown, Christchurch, Dunedin, and expansive regions like Milford Sound and Franz Josef/Waiau. The terrain of the south is unique and differs from that of the North Island, so the best time to visit will depend on the weather. The rugged landscapes of places like Milford Sound can be harsh and best explored during the New Zealand summer (December to February) when the skies are clearer, the temperatures warmer, and the climate is more conducive for hiking and exploring the beaches. However, if you are looking for snow-capped mountains and eerie landscapes, the best time to go will be during the winter months of June to August. Regardless of the season, the beauty of the South Island is constant and always beckoning.
